The ultimate level of putting our trust in God is to reach the absolute and unconditional trust exhibited by Biblical faith heroes like Job and Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego:
“Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.” Job 13:15 (NKJV)
16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”
28 “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.” Daniel 3:16-28
After 13 years of battle (given less than 2 years of life expectancy after diagnosis) against an incurable virulent sarcoma I have approached this absolute level of my trust in God. This did not happen all at once, but developed over time as I saw God increasingly overcome immense obstacles in my path as he fulfilled His plan for my life (“The Lord will work out his plans for my life.” Psalm 138:8 (LB) [the original NIV version reads: “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me”]).
